No Homecoming Fireworks

Today we must inform you that we will no longer be able to host a fireworks display as a part of Homecoming celebration.

When the Campus Activities Board sat down last semester and discussed what we wanted the Sesquicentennial Homecoming celebration to look like, we had two main focuses:

1. Make this a Homecoming to remember!
2. Incorporate events/elements that are open to the whole campus, not just student organizations.

As our plans moved forward the idea of fireworks seemed like a perfect fit.

From the very beginning we were hesitant that this idea would be approved; to our surprise, we received the approval and we moved forward with the plans. Over the past few months, we have been working hard to make fireworks a reality for the campus, so much so, our plans were solidified enough to included the event on all of our publicity. As of this week, it was brought to our attention, through the final planning stages, that due to gaps in insurance and liability concerns we would not be able to have a fireworks show. It was never our intention to false advertise Homecoming, and are just as disappointed in this unfortunate turn of events.

As we move into the Homecoming weekend, please know that all other plans and events will still be a go. We are excited to be offering events that are open to all students including the parade through campus, the Pep Fest, the Cookout with Famous Dave’s BBQ, a six foot bonfire with music provided by Hot 96 radio station, and the Eric Hutchinson/Tyrone Wells Homecoming Concert. We hope to see you all there celebrating this amazing celebration!

Happy Homecoming 2011 – Black & Gold Never Gets Old!
